ISBN – International Standard Book Number

Where does the ISBN have to appear on my book?

The ISBN must be printed on the back cover and on the copyright page. Incidentally, a person who uses an ISBN from BoD is also obligated to name BoD as the publisher on the copyright page as follows:
Manufactured and published by Books on Demand GmbH, Norderstedt, Germany
At this point we also wish to point out that a bar code has to be inserted on the back cover of all books which are available in bookstores so your book can be scanned in at cash registers. This bar code is included in BoD Classic. If you use this service we will generate it for you which you can simply download and place on the back cover of your book.

The ISBN should be inserted along with the bar code in a clearly visible way on the back cover of your book.

Where do I get the ISBN?

You get an ISBN whenever you publish with BoD (except with the BoD Fun service). If you have already signed an Author Agreement with BoD and are working on the design of your book, you can request the ISBN online while working on your new book project.

What has changed since 1 January 2007?

All books which have appeared since 1 January 2007 must have the 13-digit ISBN. Any books published before that date do not have to be adjusted to the new number system retroactively.

More information about this issue and a template for printing the ISBN is available in our download area.
