The challenge
 
With approximately 6,500 new titles per year, Springer Science+Business Media has a large cumulative increase in print runs. As a scientific publisher, the publishing group‘s program includes many specialized titles with limited print runs and high levels of color use.

The publishing group wanted to make its numerous niche titles available for online sales in order to benefit from the profitable long tail business. The company was also looking for ways of further optimizing its own distribution processes.
 
 
The solution
 
With the switch to the book-on-demand method, many frontlist and backlist titles have been digitized by Springer Science+Business Media, and BoD uses the print PDF files in the book production process. All titles can be printed and shipped, and the minimum print run was reduced to one. This eliminates not only the complicated process of calculating print runs, but also costly small print runs themselves. Thanks to the electronic link to the publisher’s distribution center, orders are shipped straight from the printer as drop shipments. This way, BoD helps Springer Science+Business Media to increase the efficiency of its distribution processes.
