Questions about BoD
What does the name BoD mean?
Answer:
BoD is an acronym for Books on Demand, meaning “books as ordered”. The name expresses our business concept: we print from a print run of one copy onwards as soon as we receive an order.
BoD calls itself a publishing service. What does that mean?
Answer:
BoD’s customers include authors, publishers, and companies to whom BoD offers a publishing service with a direct link to German-language bookstores. Thanks to being listed in the catalogues of the book wholesalers Libri and Schweizer Buchzentrum, as well as the German Books in Print, BoD titles are available in approximately 6,000 German-language bookstores. In addition, the books are also in the catalogues of about 1,000 online bookstores, from which they can be ordered, plus in the most important English-language book markets and at amazon.com. BoD offers publishers extensive printing and logistics services. Authors can use our services to publish their works. These services include printing, editing, layout, dealing with bookstores, as well as marketing. When an order is received, BoD produces books within 24 hours, starting with a print run of one copy, and ships them to the end customers within a few days via well-known book wholesalers.
How long has BoD been in the market?
Answer:
The idea of “Books on Demand” was born in 1997. After an intensive development phase BoD published its first book as a paperback as early as in July 1998. Due to the positive media response and the publication of the BoD services on the Internet in July 1999, the number of titles sky-rocketed. As a result, the 1,000th BoD title was already published in December 1999. At the same time Libri received the renowned Smithsonian Award for its innovative technology concept. On 1 January 2001 the “BoD project” become the company Books on Demand GmbH. With more than 20,000 titles in print, Books on Demand GmbH – BoDTM is the leading on-demand service provider in Germany, Austria, Denmark, and Switzerland.
